Why? & Wavves

As I already tweeted, Why?’s new album is coming soon and the name of it is Eskimo Snow. Here’s a link to an interview they did with pitchfork.

Something I liked:

Basically, we recorded two albums at once when we recorded our last record, Alopecia. [Eskimo Snow] was supposed to come out first, actually, at first. Later, we decided to put out Alopecia first, and then we went back and worked more on this one and mixed it some more. But it’s been in the works for a long time; it’s been recorded for a couple of years. It was recorded in February of 2007, so it’s been in the ether quite a while. It is going to be a grand pleasure to have this thing out in the world. - Yoni Wolf

It pleases me this was recorded at the same time. I loved Alopecia, so if he was in a similar mindset when he recorded Eskimo Snow I consider it very good news.

Also, in a rare instance of actually being interesting twice in one day. P4K has an awesome/epic story regarding Wavves’ melt down in Spain.

8 elite songwriters from my generation:

Elliott Smith: “The first time I saw you I knew it would never last. I’m not half what I wish I was”

Ben Gibbard (Death Cab For Cutie): “Then Labor day came and went and we shed what was left of our summer skin”

Jeff Tweedy (Wilco): “Hide your soft skin, your sorrow is sunshine. Listen to my eyes”

Phil Elvrum (Mt. Eerie, The Microphones): “fog obliterates the morning and i don’t know where i am. the heart is pounding and you are always on my mind”

Mike Kinsella (Owen): “one of these days i’ll get a real job. one that actually pays, like my dad had. and you know my father, the bartender. he used to wear a suit to work before he hit the drink. the old man, he used to do a lot of things.

Yoni Wolf (Why?): “Should we be tempted by thief or saint. it seems I leave and you stay to crawl the cage and curse. But don’t regret the done dirt, there is no life plan set, you just swallow the cold and follow your breath until death.”

Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes): “When you drive home to your place, from that job that makes you sleep, back to the thoughts that keep you awake”

Jon Brion: Now, I don’t lose my place like I used to. I’m not moved by your artful display. No, you can’t draw me in like you used to, but you can still ruin my day.”

Yes I’m leaving some out, and these aren’t necessarily my favorite musicians. Though I think these guys are definitely among the best when it comes to pure song writing. For example, I think Oberst has a borderline terrible voice, but I can’t deny that he can write one hell of a song.
